Seventeen: Sacrifice
Sacrifice
_____________________________________________________________
Sacrifice is something we understood but never accepts. We understood that sacrificing something- which have a cost, may bring us something good. However we often would be prevented to proceed due to the 'doubt' causing us to think about the opportunity cost in the action would bring. Example may be, "I want to increase my fitness" yet we surround ourselves with excuses ["But I can be scrolling Instagram/Tiktok, etc."] So how can we move forward in the aspect of this?
Sacrifice has a concept we need to understand. Allow me to introduce you to Jordan Peterson. He is a Canadian Professor of Psychology. You can search more about him in his website [https://www.jordanbpeterson.com/]. Once in a lecture he talked about something that is very interesting. He has used Peter pan as a reference [which I had linked below for you to watch].
He had explained a phenomenon that is quite interesting. He mentioned that without sacrifice, we would be like Peter Pan where we would not want to escape from childhood. We wish for the things that make us feel magical, where we can be anything or anyone. Peter Pan shows a part of us who don't want to give it up (childhood), especially when surrounded with adults like "Captain hook" whom is chased by a crocodile with time ticking in it. His explanation of Sacrifice is very crucial as it shows that sacrifice will always be needed but its which sacrifice would you pick. Either it will be a sacrifice that others pick for you or a sacrifice you pick for yourself. In the end you have the power over a measure/event that sacrifice is needed .
After understanding the term, we first need to understand what is the reason YOU want to do the something that you are hoping to do. So I want you to ask yourself a few questions which you MUST ask when you are thinking of starting something new because without that you cannot move on in whatever you are trying to achieve. Here is some question you might want to ask:
Why am I doing this? What benefits would it bring? What would I need to SACRIFICE to ACHIEVE this?
All we should understand is that without questions, our spirit will be asleep and not be able to function properly. Okay, once you understand the reason WHY you want to achieve something, let us understand things we may need to sacrifice. This is because whenever we want to do something, there is always a sacrifice to be made. Sacrifice can come in 3 forms:
1. Time
2. Passion/Work
3. Money
Lets go into a deeper detail one by one. Firstly the sacrificial of time which is the hardest to do in my opinion. Time are usually very much taken for granted by many of us, I would argue 90% of the humans has take time for granted without realizing it. Everyone in their life would use an excuse such as "I do not have enough time" , but if we think of it clearly you do have time. It is shown by the amount of time you spend on entertainment platform such as YouTube, Netflix, Tiktok, Instagram and others. I guarantee if you to total it up, you would tend to hit 3-4 hours or more per day. That would be your opportunity cost right there. I want to clarify one thing before I continue, I am not trying to convince you to not use your time on entertainment. I am saying instead of making excuses, try to reduce your time on some aspect and make the sacrifice that is needed to proceed. In the end I can guarantee you the satisfying feeling in the end and the benefits it brings you. Imagine you reduce an hour a day of your time everyday on social media and use it to read a book. I can guarantee you that after a period of time, you will be smarter and also learn many new skill. It is a habit that will be formed and it is a strong investment for your future. An example is a marathon runner I know, he aspire to be the best he can at what he do and since young he had sacrificed a lot of his time compare to others to fulfil his dream. He differs from other people I know, I am not too familiar with him but we once talked and I learnt he always slept early so he can wake up at 4-5am for a morning run and often he would proceed to end his day with another run or training with a coach and sometimes his father.
Sacrificing passion or work is another way. This is a weird form to talk about but this is quite important too. Something we can look upon is boy's desire for video games, a research done on 2018 shows 18 year old boys spend an average of 2-3 hour or more on video games and we should realize that younger boys may have more time to play. Imagine if you spend 30 minutes to 1 hour of the time to read a book or watch a lecture, your knowledge will grow as well as your skill which allows you to expand a business or get a raise in a job. Life is there to question your ability to learn and grow which soon enough will benefit you in the long run.
Another important sacrifice is money. People tend to get sensitive when talking about money but the truth is society[the rich and government] has build us to be sensitive on it. We are made so we do not like to talk about things related to money such as the salary, the income and the money you spent. Instead you brag on the liabilities you own like a new car or new house. People don't understand sacrificing money is something most people need. I have read a book recently which is called "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert T. Kiyosaki. His concept is very interesting and he talked about how a poor or middle class look at profit after the house they bought is sold, while the rich know it will be a profit after it is bought. There is many ideas talked by him and I strongly suggest for you to give it a read if you are interested.
Below is a quick summary for how he is raised:
In the end there is much more factors that may give you discussion about the topic sacrifice, but to me this is all I can explain for now. In summary, Sacrifice happens countless of times in a lifetime and it decides our life as day passes. I hope you understand we should always sacrifice something to make ourselves better when the opportunity arrives. Opportunity is everywhere but what prevent us to move on is the fear of sacrifice and the excuses surrounding us. Be brave and bold and understand yourself as full as you can to allow growth in your life!!
